Authorities say an 80-year-old woman died and her 76-year-old brother was critically injured in a two-alarm fire at their Everett home that was likely started by careless disposal of a cigarette. Deputy Chief Bill Humphries said the blaze first reported at about 9 p.m. on Wednesday appears to have started when a first-floor tenant threw a cigarette butt out a window and ignited some debris on the porch. Edna Power died. Her brother, Edward Power, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was listed Thursday in critical condition suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.
