Boston (State House News Service) -- Quincy native Joseph Murphy, first deputy commissioner at the Division of Insurance since 2006, was named Monday as the state's insurance commissioner, a post he had held on an acting basis since Nonnie Burnes stepped down in September.
A former chief of staff and research director with the Legislature's Financial Services and Insurance committees, Murphy will oversee the division's 130 employees and $12 million budget.
In a statement, Murphy said the division under his watch would "continue to protect the interests of consumers on very important kitchen-table issues while regulating a vibrant marketplace for the industry."
The administration used Murphy's announcement as a chance to point out that 11 insurers have begun writing auto policies in Massachusetts since the managed competition replaced strict rate-setting in 2008.
The administration also indicated recommendations are expected later in February in connection with an investigation into the surging costs of small business health insurance.
