Westwood (AP/WBZ Newsroom) -- Major back-up continue on Route 128 Friday morning after a motorist in Westwood was seriously injured by a catch basin grate.
State police say a man traveling north on the highway this morning when the storm drain cover became dislodged and flew through the windshield of the 2003 Toyota Corolla. The impact caused the vehicle to careen into a Jersey barrier before coming to rest in the left lane of the highway.
The highway was closed while a medical helicopter landed to take the unidentified driver to a Boston hospital. State police later reopened one lane northbound but traffic was backed up for miles and commuters were advised to seek alternate routes.
State police and MassHighway are investigating.
