"Acting doesn't have anything to do with listening to the words. We never really listen, in general conversation, to what the other person is saying. We listen to what they mean. And what they mean is often quite apart from the words....
I’m happy for him. Very happy. Frankly though, I’m happier for me. When it comes to the fate of Robert Downey, Jr., I’ll admit to being selfish. He provides as much entertainment in a two-hour flick as any actor I know. These days he is clean, healthy, and a joy to watch.
Uphill battles? I seem to be waging them more often these days. Too much technology, too little time spent doing the old school stuff---talking across the fence with neighbors, sitting down for tea or coffee served in actual china, relaxing at the end of the day with an honest to goodness book, the kind with a spine and paper pages.
What is more troublesome? His growing list of sexual transgressions or the number of horrid golf puns that smarmy commentators can’t stop themselves from making?
It can appear muffled under a din, almost as faint as a whisper. At other times, the words ring out clearly, no strain to catch them. You’re apt to hear it more and more these days, what with the state of things. It’s a three word phrase.....
I was invited to a birthday party. Like most, this one had its share of song, attending friends and a rather impressive birthday cake. But this wasn’t a typical party celebrating the birth of any one individual. No, this was a party thrown to honor a whole group of hardy men and women who have provided the rest of us with more gifts than we may ever realize.
I am a lot of things. I still hold out hope to stretch and grow and do even more with my life. Becoming a curmudgeon isn’t likely to be one of them. It’s just not part of my DNA plan. Nor am I apt to morph into a renowned muckraker, rabble rouser or whistle blower.
So, who was the most shocked to hear that our young President Obama had won the Nobel Peace prize? The recipient himself of course. The exalted Nobel committee nominated our 44th president after he had been office for eleven days, barely enough time for the Barack to find his way from the Oval Office to the Chief Executive washroom.
There are many kinds of “nervous.” There is the “nervous” one experiences waiting around in a doctor’s office; the “nervous” you feel when the poor soul in the next cubicle has just received his pink slip; the “nervous” that happens when the Sox are down by two in the ninth to the bleepin’ Yankees during a playoff game.
