Boston (AP) -- The Coast Guard says a New Bedford fishing boat became rapidly unstable as a full fishing net was lowered on deck, causing it to sink and kill its captain a year ago.
The Coast Guard said Friday that its investigation showed the 71-foot dragger Costa & Corvo capsized and sank quickly, killing 57-year-old Antonio Mesquita.
Another fishing boat rescued three other crew members.
The boat sank Nov. 13, 2008, about 118 miles east of Nantucket on Georges Bank. It currently rests in 120 feet of water.
Capt. Ray Perry, commander of the Coast Guard's southeastern New England sector, says "we may never know exactly what happened."
The Coast Guard searched more than 280 square miles for more than 30 hours trying to find Mesquita.
