A Hollis man was arraigned Thursday on a charge that he helped dispose of evidence from the killing of a Mont Vernon woman last month and an attack on her daughter. Autumn Savoy, 20, appeared in court in Nashua, shackled and wearing a jail jumpsuit. He appeared more composed than when he was arrested Wednesday and taken into a different court, looking tearful and putting his face in his hands.
On Thursday, he looked at a small group of family and friends, who occasionally cried and left afterward without commenting.
Savoy was answering a charge of hindering apprehension or prosecution; he had been arraigned on a similar charge and a conspiracy charge in Milford on Wednesday. His bail remains at $100,000 cash and he faces more hearings on Dec. 1 and Dec. 3.
He's accused of assisting two others charged with murdering Kimberly Cates by disposing of their clothes and items taken from her home and throwing them into the Nashua River. Police say Savoy told police investigating the Oct. 4 attack that killed Cates, 42, and injured her 11-year-old daughter, Jaime, that the two men charged with murder, Christopher Gribble and Steven Spader, spent the night with him.
No motive has been given in the case, and documents remain sealed. Savoy, who had attended Hollis/Brookline High School, was charged last year with possession of a controlled substance after three students overdosed on prescription medication within a week. He was sentenced to six months in jail, a term deferred for two years based on good conduct and counseling.
In court Thursday, he was told he was ordered to have no contact with the other defendants - Gribble, 20; Spader, 17; William Marks, 18; and Quinn Glover, 18. When asked whether he knew who they were, Savoy said, "Yes, I do, your honor." The day before, he told a different judge he was scared and did only what he was told to do.
Gribble and Spader are charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for allegedly using a machine and a knife, respectively, to kill Cates. They also are accused of attempted murder in the attack on Jaimie Cates.
Marks and Glover are charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and robbery in connection to the attack.
