Barnstable (AP) -- A ballot question to change the way Barnstable's town council is elected that passed earlier this month by a single vote has been reversed after a recount.
Town clerk Linda Hutchenrider told the Cape Cod Times that a hand count of the votes on Tuesday found 2,584 opposed to the measure and 2,574 in favor. The original count after the Nov. 3 election was 2,580-2,579 in favor of the measure that would have reduced the council from 13 to 11 members, and required some to be elected on an at-large basis. It would also have expanded the school committee.
Hutchenrider said the hand count included some votes initially missed by the scanning machines because they were either partially filled in, or circled rather than filled in.
