Fort Hood Hero Once Worked In Newton Restaurant

Newton, Mass (WBZ Newsroom AP)  -- One of two police officers who confronted the alleged Fort Hood killer was once a waitress at a restaurant and bar in Newton.

34-year-old Sgt. Kimberly Munley worked at Dunn-Gaherin's in Newton Upper Falls about five years ago, according to workers there.

"She was always a very strong person," Megan Cullinane told the Boston Globe.

"Very independent, always dedicated to become a police officer."

"We're all very proud of her here in Massachusetts."

"She was just a great girl and she always wanted to be in law enforcement," co-owner Seana Gaherin told the paper.

"We're just so proud of her and we're just glad that she's o.k."

"We're thrilled to be associated with her."

Munley, who was known in Newton as Kimberly Barbour, was hurt in the shootout with Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan.

Hasan was critically wounded.

Munley, whose injuries weren't believed to be life threatening, won wide praise after the incident. Facebook fan pages quickly sprouted up, with well-wishers cheering her heroism and crediting her and Sgt. Mark Todd with saving lives.
