As Governor Deval Patrick prepares to announce budget cuts and lawmakers ready themselves to hear arguments for and against casinos, a new poll finds majority support for establishing casinos but also a majority of adults who don't want a casino in their town. The Western New England College poll of 522 adults, taken between October 18 and October 22, found 56 percent support allowing the state to license casinos, with 34 percent opposed.
Support for casinos was highest among adults between the ages of 30 and 59, those with a high school education or less, individuals with annual household incomes of less than $35,000 and residents of western Massachusetts. Fifty-seven percent said they oppose having a casino in their community and 38 percent support having a casino in their town.
