More MA schools need improvement

Boston (AP)  -- The state Department of Education says the number of schools identified under federal standards as needing improvement is up 4 percent this year.

The department says 54 percent of the state's schools were flagged as needing improvement under the No Child Left Behind Act, compared with 50 percent in 2008.

The 937 schools made the list after their scores on MCAS, the state's student assessment tests, this year indicated they didn't make adequate improvements in English and math.

Twenty-one schools were removed from the list after showing sufficient progress for two straight years.

The department says Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester is currently redesigning its academic support and intervention programs. The goal is to more closely align the programs with severity of the problems they find.
