Gov. Patrick to have hip replacement surgery

Boston (AP)  -- Gov. Deval Patrick is set to have hip replacement surgery.

The Democrat announced late Wednesday that Dr. Harry Rubash will perform the operation on his left hip Sept. 1 at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Spokesman Kyle Sullivan says the surgery "is necessitated by consistent pain caused in part by arthritis and a longtime pre-existing injury."

The 53-year-old Patrick had a truck accident in 1978 while working on a United Nations youth training project in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Sullivan says the governor will be hospitalized for about 4 days, but will be able to resume his official duties 48 hours after the surgery.

Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray will handle any time-sensitive matters.
