Worcester (AP) -- A former chief financial officer of a Massachusetts museum has been indicted in connection with an alleged embezzlement of more than $1.3 million.
Attorney General Martha Coakley's office announced Tuesday that 58-year-old Peggy Kempton, of Hollis, N.H., turned herself in to authorities and pleaded not guilty in Worcester Superior Court to a number of charges, including larceny over $250 by single scheme.
The investigation into Kempton began in September 2008 after employees at Fruitlands Museum in the town of Harvard noticed financial irregularities.
Prosecutors allege Kempton stole museum funds to pay for personal purchases that Kempton and her children made using credit cards.
Kempton's attorney, Jeffrey Denner, says his client was suffering from "serious psychiatric problems."
