Julien, Chara, Thomas Hit It Big In Vegas



Las Vegas, NV (AP)  -- Winners of the 2008-2009 NHL awards, presented Thursday night at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Voting is by members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association, except the Vezina which is awarded by NHL general managers, and the Adams which is determined by a poll of NHL Broadcasters' Association members.

Hart Memorial Trophy, MVP -- Alexander Ovechkin, Washington.

Vezina Trophy, goaltender -- Tim Thomas, Boston.

James Norris Memorial Trophy, defenseman -- Zdeno Chara, Boston.

Calder Memorial Trophy, rookie -- Steve Mason, Columbus.

Frank J. Selke Trophy, defensive forward -- Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit.

Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, most gentlemanly -- Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit.

Jack Adams Award, coach -- Claude Julien, Boston.

King Clancy Trophy, humanitarian contribution to hockey -- Ethan Moreau, Edmonton.

Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, perserverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey -- Steve Sullivan, Nashville.

Celtics Cave In to Cavs, 104-93


  CLEVELAND (AP) - Leon Powe has seen the Boston Celtics at their best. They aren't there anymore.
   After coming off the bench and helping the Cleveland Cavaliers put away the Celtics 104-93 on Sunday, Powe, who won an NBA title with Boston in 2008, took a moment to reflect on his former team, a squad showing signs of age and perhaps vulnerability.
  

Red Sox Slide Past Twins, 6-4


  FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Kevin Slowey threw three perfect innings for Minnesota. He was even happier to be pitching pain-free.
   Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis drove in fifth-inning runs for the Boston Red Sox in a 6-4 victory over the Twins on Sunday, after Slowey's strong start.

Dice-K cuts bullpen session short, likely to start season on the DL


     Tim Wakefield is a savvy veteran.
     When asked how the Red Sox would deal with having six starting pitchers and only five spots in the rotation, Wakefield told people to relax -- these things have a way of working themselves out.  He wasn't referring to Daisake Matsuzaka but  he appears to be the odd man out for now.

Vermont wins America East over B.U., headed to the NCAA's


A week of heartbreak and high hopes ended for Vermont in a most satisfying way - with a ticket to the NCAA tournament.
Four days after Evan Fjeld's mother died of cancer, the forward and his Catamounts teammates outlasted Boston University for an 83-70 victory, the America East Conference championship and an automatic bid to the tournament.
 

Wes Welker has surgery for torn rotator cuff


Patriots' wideout Wes Welker was already going to miss significant time following reconstructive knee surgery.  Now reports say he also had surgery for a torn rotator cuff.
