Boston (AP/WBZ Newsroom) -- Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner came to Boston Wednesday where he announced that organizations working in 33 states would receive $1.5 billion in business tax credits fueled with federal stimulus money and aimed at creating and saving jobs in areas hit hard by the economic downturn.
He made the announcement at Project Hope on Dudley Street in Roxbury.
The New Markets Tax Credit program was established in 2000 and is credited with creating an estimated 210,000 construction jobs and 45,000 full-time permanent jobs.
Follwing the annoucement, Geithner had lunch with Governor Deval Patrick in his office.
Patrick also welcomed Irish President Mary McAleese in the corner office Wednesday morning, where they were joined by Senate President Therese Murray and House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo.
