Boston (AP) -- House lawmakers are expected to debate a Democratic-backed budget plan to increase the Massachusetts sales tax from 5 percent to 6-point 25 percent today. The change is expected to generate an extra $900 million a year in revenue.
It comes at a time when Massachusetts struggles with plunging revenues, rising unemployment and a deteriorating transportation infrastructure.
The Associated Press obtained a copy of the plan, which rejects other options. The include raising the state income tax rate or apply the sales tax to a range of services currently exempt.
It also rejects Gov. Deval Patrick's proposals to add 18 cents to the state's current 23.5 cents per gallon gas tax, and his idea to expand the sales tax to include alcohol, candy and soda.
