Quincy firefighters approve pay freeze

Quincy, MA (WBZ Newsroom) -- Firefighters in Quincy have agreed to a one-year wage freeze to save their jobs.

The union overwhelmingly voted in favor of the plan that's predicted to save the city $500,000 and the firefighters 20 jobs.

Union President ernie Arienti tells WBZ-TV he supports the firefighters' choice to forego their annual average $2,000 raise.

Mayor Tom Koch is also grateful, but he says this doesn't make the firefighters exempt from future job cuts, though he hints that unions refusing to accept a salary freeze are more at-risk.

The police and teachers unions have still not decided whether to accept a wage freeze.
