Newton (AP) -- A West Newton ramp on the Mass. Pike will temporarily close during morning commutes in January to check its safety and relieve congestion.
The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority announced Monday that the eastbound ramp at Interchange 16 will shut down weekdays Jan. 12 to Jan. 23, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Officials want to study the ramp's safety and decrease traffic at the eastbound Weston tolls in the morning.
Turnpike engineers said three-mile backups after Interchange 15 in Weston are caused by vehicles entering the highway at a rate of 950 per hour one exit east at Interchange 16.
Commuters are urged to use onramps at Interchange 15 and 17 in Newton Corner during the closure.
MBTA buses and emergency vehicles will still have access to the closed ramp.
