Germs

Boston -- Today's Segment:

It's that time of year again...time to watch out for germs around your house and how they can affect your family.

A new study finds cold sufferers often leave their germs on places you wouldn't expect...such as TV remotes, salt shakers, and other household items...where the germs can live for two days...or more. University of Virginia researcher Owen Hendley says toys are also a germ culprit...

Doctors have long advised frequent hand washing to avoid spreading germs...

Using hand sanitizers can also help, but Hendley says disinfectant wipes aren't always the best way to keep those germs from spreading...

Hendley says the best way to kill virus germs may be a bit extreme...

The federal centers for disease control and prevention paid for the study, which was presented at a conference of the American Society for Microbiology.
