MA Democrats add to majority in Legislature

Boston (AP)  -- Democrats have added three seats to their overwhelming majority in the state House of Representatives.

Democrats earned a seat in the 2nd Hampden District -- a Republican stronghold for more than three decades -- when Brian Ashe defeated fellow Longmeadow Select Board member William Scibelli. Ashe will fill the seat being left open by the retirement of state Rep. Mary Rogeness, who has held the seat since 1991.

Democrat Bill Bowles defeated Republican and fellow Attleboro city councilor George Ross in the race to succeed John Lepper, who retired after 14 years on Beacon Hill.

And in the 8th Middlesex District, Democrat Carolyn Dykema edged Republican Daniel Haley. The two Holliston residents were vying for the seat of Republican Paul Loscocco of Holliston, who did not seek re-election.

Republicans will now control just 16 of the 160 seats in the House.
