East Greewich, RI (AP) -- A local disaster assistance team is heading to Texas ahead of Hurricane Gustav.
The Rhode Island Disaster Medical Assistance Team includes 35 health care professionals.
They'll leave the state Thursday and will be stationed in Texas outside the direct path of the storm.
Gustav was closing in on Jamaica on Thursday. Forecasters said it could strengthen to a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 111 mph.
Forecasters expected the hurricane to hit somewhere between the Florida Panhandle and Texas in the coming days.
The city of New Orleans has drawn up evacuation plans, and the Louisiana governor declared a state of emergency.
