Boston (WBZ Newsroom)  -- Four people headed home from a night of "clubbing" in the South End were allegedly attacked early Sunday morning. Police are calling it a possible hate crime.

The friends were on Columbus Avenue around 2:45 a.m. when Jeffrey---who does not want his last name used---says they became the victims of an unprovoked attack.  He says four men drove up to the group, then one of them began shouting swear words and gay slurs. Jeffrey says the men got out of the car and beat his other two friends about the head before taking off. Two friends were taken by ambulance to Beth Israel Hospital and were later released. Jeffrey says he now feels unsafe in the neighborhood.

Boston police say the incident remains under investigation.
