MA sees cut in Homeland Security funds

Boston, MA (WBZ Newsroom)  -- The Department of Homeland Security has given the Bay State $17.2 million in federal funding this year.

That’s a 15 percent decrease from last year.

State Homeland Security Chief Juliette Kayyem says she knew the funding cuts were coming, and that the department has streamlined state strategy to focus on first responders and cities and towns.

Kayyem says the state plans to direct the new funds towards enhancing preparedness for chemical, biological, or radioactive explosions.

It also plans to enhance preparation for a pandemic flu outbreak.
