Cyberbullying

Bullying is not new. However, in recent years it has received more attention and greater efforts, especially at schools, are now underway to address this issue.

Here is a new twist to bullying--it is called cyberbullying.

A recent study reported that 40% of the middle school students who were evaluated stated that they had been targets of cyberbullying. Both boys and girls reported being bullied.

The students stated that they have been teased or hassled in a mean way through e-mails, instant messages, or text messaging.

They also reported that rumors or unkind comments were said about them via the computer.

Although a fair amount is know concerning the effects of being bullied face to face, very little is know regarding the effects of cyberbullying.

However, the authors of the study voiced concern over the high frequency of the bullying and the potential negative impact it may have on the adolescent.

This is one more concern for parents whose adolescents use computers.
