E-Mail Story Print Story Posted: Monday, 14 July 2008 3:41PM Human Growth Hormone Dr. Murray Feingold Reporting We hear a great deal about athletes using human growth hormone but it is being used much more frequently in another way—the prevention of aging. There has been a tremendous increase in the number of anti-aging clinics and they advocate the use of growth hormone as a way to keep looking young. Growth hormone can be obtained illegally. There are pharmacy companies that produce it and it maybe diluted or contaminated. There is also a nation wide distribution ring that supplies human growth hormone and they are presently being investigated by various governmental agencies. Recently, one company was fined $10.5 million dollars for distributing growth hormone for non-medical uses. There are definite indications for the medical use of human growth hormone, mainly the treatment of growth hormone deficiency. The specific amount of hormone present in the body can be accurately measured by blood tests. But does it prevent aging? Studies have not shown that growth hormone is beneficial in preventing aging. Also, there are side effects including swelling, joint pains, increased risk of developing diabetes, and carpal tunnel-like symptoms.
