Walt Perkins is the morning sports anchor for WBZ NewsRadio 1030.
On February 9, 2009 Perkins moves into a chair that had not been vacant for 38 years, that of WBZ weekday morning sports anchor.
"Nobody replaces Gil Santos. Gil was one-of-a-kind", says Perkins. "I just hope to bring our listeners the information they seek in a concise, informative and entertaining manner. It may, at times, be irreverent, it may be sarcastic, humorous, and even deadly serious but hopefully it will always be entertaining."
Perkins rejoined the station in 2001 as a weekend sports anchor, he had worked at the station in 1988 while working for 2 other media outlets WCVB and WSBK at the time.
He freelanced for WCVB from 1988 until 2003 and prior to that he worked in television at WLNE in Providence from 1985-1988. Perkins worked for WGIR in Manchester, New Hampshire and WEAN/WPJB-FM in Providence following graduation from the University of New Hampshire where he majored in Business Administration and minored in Communications.
Even though Perkins had the good fortune to cover the top sporting events in the country during those years (World Series, Super Bowl, NBA and NHL playoffs, Final Four, Little League World Series), Perkins says, "My greatest thrill was raising and training our first Great Dane, Hamlet." Hamlet became the number one obedience Dane in the United States in 1995. "Hamlet was a tremendous ambassador for this breed and the feeling he generated among the Dane community can be found at the following link:" http://www.ginnie.com/DaDane325.shtml.
Perkins was born in Marysville, California where his father was stationed in the Air Force and he grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire and graduated from the University of New Hampshire.
