Auld, Recchi
Ottawa Senators' Alex Auld, left, looks back into the net as Boston Bruins' Mark Recchi celebrates teammate Zdeno Chara's (not shown) goal during the second period of an NHL hockey game in Ottawa on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. (AP Photo/The Canadian Pre
One-Year Recchi Crew

Mark Recchi has agreed to stay with the Boston Bruins.

The NHL's sixth leading active goal scorer has agreed to a one-year deal, a person familiar with the negotiations said Thursday on condition of anonymity because final details were still being worked out. The club had no comment.
The Natural-ized

Red Sox left fielder Jason Bay married an American, has two American daughters and makes his living playing America's pastime.

Now he can say he's an American, too.
Ainge Fan of Extended Run of "B3"

The Big Three of the Boston Celtics very well could stick around beyond their current contracts with a changing cast of supporting players.

Ray Allen will be 34 after the one year left on his contract, Paul Pierce will be 33 after his two remaining years and Kevin Garnett will be 36 after the three years left on his deal.
Rally-Ho! Sox in 11, 6-5

One day after being victimized by the greatest comeback in Baltimore Orioles history, the Boston Red Sox staged an improbable rally of their own.

The Red Sox used a four-run ninth inning to pull even, Julio Lugo singled in the tiebreaking run in the 11th and Jonathan Papelbon became Boston's career saves leader by closing out a 6-5 victory over the Orioles on Wednesday.
Meltdown in Maryland

John Smoltz watched in disbelief as the Boston Red Sox wound up on the wrong end of the biggest comeback in Baltimore Orioles history.

Smoltz wasn't upset that he didn't earn his long-awaited 211th victory. He just couldn't believe that the Red Sox didn't win, either.
Sox Blank Birds

It's about as close as it gets to a sure thing in baseball: Jon Lester and Jonathan Papelbon pitching for Boston against the Baltimore Orioles.

Lester threw seven shutout innings, Papelbon earned a milestone save and the Red Sox extended their dominance of the Orioles with a 4-0 victory Monday night.
Bruins Tab Jordan Caron with 25th Pick

The Boston Bruins picked right wing Jordan Caron with the 25th overall selection in the NHL draft Friday night.

Caron, 18, had 36 goals with 31 assists last year in junior hockey in Quebec for Rimouski. He is 6-foot-2 and 199 pounds.
Caron led his team in scoring last season over 56 regular-season games, and ranked 11th in the league in scoring.
Sox Leave Hot-Lanta with Loss

Tommy Hanson was very much aware of who he'd be facing in these two starts.
It didn't faze him a bit.
The big right-hander became the first NL rookie to beat the New York Yankees and Boston in consecutive starts, throwing two-hit ball over six scoreless innings, and homers by Chipper Jones and Garret Anderson carried Atlanta past the Red Sox 2-1 on Sunday.
Celtics Take Guard with Lone Draft Pick

Lester Hudson of Tennessee-Martin is the Boston Celtics only pick of Thursday night's NBA draft.
The 2008 NBA champions chose the 6-foot-3 guard with the 58th of the draft's 60 picks. The Celtics had traded their first-round pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 7-for-1 trade for Kevin Garnett after the 2006-07 season.
Smoltz, Sox, Drop Finale' in D.C.

Time "absolutely stood still" for John Smoltz as game time approached.
He sped through his warmup faster than planned. His phone was overflowing with 71 text messages. Try as he might to downplay his Boston Red Sox debut -- a 9-3 loss to Washington on Thursday night -- there was no way he could avoid the magnitude of the moment.
Red Sox Beat Nationals, 6-4

The ball was bouncing toward Nick Green, and so was the tumbling sharp end of Elijah Dukes' broken bat.
The bat got there first. The Boston Red Sox shortstop deflected the barrel with his right forearm as the ball rolled between his legs. The play was ruled a hit and Green was unharmed, but the dicey second-inning play in Wednesday night's 6-4 win over the Washington Nationals gave the debate on maple bats fuel.
Bruins Hope to Move On Draft Day

The Boston Bruins are trying to move up from the 25th pick in the NHL draft to take a particular player they like.
That player is not among a group of about four in the draft who are ready to play next season, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Tuesday.
Celtics Aren't Feeling a Draft

The Boston Garden will be quiet for the NBA draft.
No party for the season ticketholders and sponsors. No network live shot from the war room. No congratulatory phone call to the next Boston Celtics star on Thursday night, when the top college and international players are distributed around the league.
Red Sox Throttle Nationals, 11-3

Rarely have two nicknames proved more appropriate. Red Sox Nation invaded NatsTown for the first time Tuesday night, and the result was no contest -- on or off the field.
The Boston Red Sox discovered another home away from home in the nation's capital, drawing a record-setting crowd for an 11-3 win against the overmatched Washington Nationals.
Green Day at Fenway

Nick Green surprised the Boston Red Sox by overcoming long odds to make the team. On Sunday, he was surprised that his homer won the game, 6-5 over the Atlanta Braves at Fenway Park on Sunday.

The shortstop who went to spring training as a non-roster player but is now the starter hit the first pitch in the bottom of the ninth just inside the right-field foul pole 302 feet from home plate.
Bruins Strike Vegas Black & Gold

The 2008-2009 Boston Bruins may have disappointed themselves and their fans with a Conference semi-final exit from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but their regular season accomplishments did not go unnoticed as three members of the organization copped awards at the NHL Awards dinner in Las Vegas Thursday night.
Sox a Fish Out of Water, Lose 2-1 to Marlins

Ricky Nolasco held the Red Sox to one hit in the first five innings Thursday night, and the Boston weather took care of the rest.
Dan Uggla and Ronny Paulino homered for Florida, and Nolasco gave up Kevin Youkilis' shot before the Marlins earned a 2-1 victory over Boston when the game was called early in the sixth because of rain.
Red Sox Hook Marlins, 6-1

Brad Penny took a line drive off his chest, and the Boston Red Sox nearly had the solution to the logjam in their pitching rotation.
Penny wasn't going away quite so easy, though.
The Red Sox right-hander remained in the game and lasted long enough to pick up his 100th career win, beating the Florida Marlins 6-1 on Wednesday night in front of the 500th straight sellout at Fenway  Park.
Red Sox Reel In Marlins

Tim Wakefield's ninth win moved him another spot closer to the AL lead, and the Boston Red Sox think it might finally be the 42-year-old knuckleballer's chance to make his first career All-Star team.

Wakefield improved to 6-0 at Fenway Park this year after the Red Sox downed the visiting Florida Marlins, 8-2, Tuesday night.
Bruins Ink Chiarelli to Contract Extension

The Boston Bruins have signed general manager Peter Chiarelli to a contract extension, rewarding the architect who built the team with the second-best record in the NHL last season.
Sox Drop Philly Finale', 11-6

Jimmy Rollins is starting to feel like his old J-Roll self.

The former MVP mired in a season-long slump believes the tiebreaking home run he hit to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to an 11-6 win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday could be the hit that sparks his season and back into All-Star form.
Broom Service!

The Boston Red Sox are 8-0 against the New York Yankees, and they'll have most of the summer to lord it over their AL East rivals.

J.D. Drew hit an RBI single to spark an eighth-inning rally, then he scored the go-ahead run on Mike Lowell's fly ball to help the Red Sox beat New York 4-3 on Thursday night.
Red Sox Beat Yankees Again, 6-5
Mark Teixeira couldn't keep the New York Yankees from losing their eighth straight game to Boston -- even with four hits, including his AL-leading 19th homer of the year.

Now the Yankees' top pitching prize will have to try to stop the skid.

Mike Lowell homered off struggling Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang, and Kevin Youkilis also connected to help give Boston a 6-5 victory on Wednesday night.
Red Sox Thump Yankees, 7-0

The last time the Red Sox beat New York six straight times to start the season, the Yankees were known as the Highlanders and it was the bandbox in Boston that was brand new.

Josh Beckett allowed only an infield hit in six innings, and David Ortiz hit his third homer of the year as the Red Sox beat the Yankees 7-0 on Tuesday night and improved to 6-0 against New York for the first time since
Rangers Take Rubber Game, 6-3

Nelson Cruz and the Texas Rangers found their offense one day after Jon Lester took it away.

Cruz led a 12-hit attack with a double, triple and homer, helping the Rangers beat the Boston Red Sox 6-3 on Sunday and bounce back from Lester's 6 1-3 innings of perfect pitching.
Patriots Take a Pass

Running back Patrick Pass is returning to the New England Patriots.

The team said Thursday that it has signed a contract with Pass, who won three Super Bowls in seven seasons with the Patriots from 2000-2006.
Harrison Calls it a Career

Two-time Pro Bowl safety Rodney Harrison announced his retirement on Wednesday, saying he is through hitting quarterbacks after a 15-year career for the New England Patriots and San Diego Chargers.

"I am done, and I am very much so at peace with that," he said in a conference call with reporters.
Krejci Hip Surgery Goes Well
Boston Bruins forward David Krejci's hip surgery was a success.

The Bruins said the surgery took place in New York on Thursday. Krejci will need four to six months to recover.

Krejci was second on the Bruins with 51 assists last season and he led the NHL with a plus-minus rating of plus-37. He scored two goals with six assists in the playoffs.
Rangers Win Opener, 5-1

Kevin Millwood and Ian Kinsler teamed to give the Texas Rangers a rare victory in Fenway Park.

Millwood held Boston scoreless for seven innings, Kinsler hit a three-run homer and the Rangers ended an eight-game losing streak in Fenway Park with a 5-1 victory over the Red Sox on Friday night.
Knuck, Knuck, Knuck!

Jason Bay's bases-loaded double keyed a six-run third inning and the Boston Red Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 6-3 victory Thursday.

Tim Wakefield (7-3) got the win, giving up three runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. The 42-year-old knuckleballer has beaten the Tigers 16 times, more than any other active pitcher.
Red Sox CageTigers, 10-5

Josh Beckett had to warm up in an crooked bullpen before Wednesday's game against the Detroit Tigers.

It didn't seem to bother him.

Beckett didn't allow a hit until the seventh inning and David Ortiz hit a two-run double, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 10-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Bruins Put '08-'09 to Bed
Zdeno Chara slung the big black equipment bag over his back and walked down the hall outside the Bruins locker room and into an offseason of healing.
The healing will be physical and mental for a team that fell short of its postseason expectations after having the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Celtics Thoughts Turn to Next Year
The first-round victory over Chicago bought the Boston Celtics two more weeks, and as they went into Game 7 against Orlando they allowed themselves to wonder whether they could extend their season long enough to get Kevin Garnett out of street clothes and on the court.
