Worcester installs drop-off box for used hypodermic needles

Worcester, Mass. (AP)  -- The city of Worcester has installed the first of four drop-off boxes for used hypodermic needles and syringes.

The yellow, mailbox-sized item was placed Monday in the reception area of AIDS Project Worcester, which has agreed to pay for collecting and disposing of the needles.

The city council approved the drop-off boxes in December but Worcester Health Commissioner Dr. Leonard Morse says installation was delayed until an agreement could be reached on collection and disposal.

Health officials and community activists hope the drop-off boxes will help prevent infectious diseases from being spread by careless disposal of needles and syringes in streets, parks and other public areas.

Morse says using the boxes, "is as easy as mailing a letter."
