Boston, MA -- Governor Deval Patrick says the “fix was in pretty early” against his casino gambling bill.
He accuses House Speaker Sal DiMasi of breaking a promise to allow an open-floor debate that could have tweaked the proposal to satisfy critics.
But DiMasi says a lot of people complain about the process when they lose, but he insists the governor’s bill got a full and fair debate.
The governor responded by saying had DiMasi allowed amendments during last week’s debate, he would have been prepared to allow slot machines at one or two of the state’s four race tracks and reduce the number of casinos, if it would have led to the overall passage of the bill.
DiMasi says the Governor never spoke of any compromises. He says his attention is now onto other matters like the state’s budget.
