Baghdad, Iraq (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful John McCain arrives in Iraq for a surprise visit with Iraqi and American leaders.
McCain has been a staunch supporter of both the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and President Bush’s troop surge last year.
McCain touts last year’s drop in sectarian violence as a turning point in the war.
The unannounced trip was kept a secret for security reasons.
The Arizona Senator is expected to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and the top U.S. military commander in Iraq, General David Patraeus.
