Anti-casino forces focus on environment

MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- Opponents of a proposed casino in Middleborough plan on focusing on the detrimental impacts of the facility on the environment at a hearing sponsored by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Casinofacts.org and the Regional Task Force on Casino Impacts say the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe's plan for a resort casino would threaten several species.

The task force has also raised concerns over the impact of waste water discharge on the Taunton River Basin and problems related to solid waste disposal.

Casinofacts has registered with the Bureau of Indian Affairs as an interested party in the Wampanoag's application to put the land into trust and will make a presentation at the March 4 hearing.

A tribal spokesman says the Wampanoags are still studying environmental issues at the 500-acre site.
