Obama order on abortion locks in health care votes


President Barack Obama and House Democratic leaders struck a last-minute deal Sunday with abortion foes to secure the final few votes needed to remake America's health care system, writing a climactic chapter in a century-old quest for near universal coverage. The House argued its way through a thicket of Republican objections toward an evening vote on the bill to extend coverage to 32 million Americans who lack it, ban insurers from denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions and cut deficits by an estimated $138 billion over a decade.

Cardinal O'Malley: health care rushed


 Cardinal Sean O'Malley of the Boston Archdiocese says there "seems to be rush" to pass a national health care overhaul without weighing its consequences.   O'Malley commented on his blog about Sunday's expected vote on health care legislation by the U.S. House of Representatives.

Obama looks beyond health care reform


Health care isn't the only reform on President Barack Obama's mind even with a make-or-break House vote Sunday.  In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama reiterates the need for serious reform in the financial system to prevent another meltdown.

Norwell woman strikes children in driveway


No charges are expected to be filed against the Borwell woman who struck her son and nephew in the driveway of her home.   Police say the woman was pulling into her driveway, which slopes downward from Hawthorne Lane, and did not see the two boys, 3 and 5 yearss old, drawing on the driveway with chalk.  

MA targets bosses in insurance crackdown


 Massachusetts has fined more than a thousand companies more than $18 million for failing to offer insurance to their workers.  That's a small fraction of what some business owners fear could happen on a national scale if President Barack Obama signs a sweeping health care overhaul.

Massachusetts outperforms nation in flu vaccinations


Massachusetts has been more successful than most states in getting its residents inoculated against the flu.  The Globe reports thirty-six percent of residents got the swine flu vaccine, while 57 percent were inoculated against  the Seasonal Flue.  On a national level, those figures are 21 percent and 37, respectively.

Fatal crash investigation on I-95 in NH


 State police say a teenager was killed and two others were injured when their pickup truck collided with a tractor trailer on Interstate 95, crossed a grass median and flipped over before stopping.  New Hampshire State Police say the vehicle driven by 18-year-old Brandon Petit, of Raymond, N.H., cut in front of a tractor trailer while trying to get off at Exit 1 on  Friday evening.

MA gov supporting renewable energy initiatives


In his first year in office, Gov. Deval Patrick placed a series of high-stakes bets on the state's economic future, from encouraging the development of a renewable energy industry to making a pitch for three destination resort casinos. While he's taken a wait-and-see approach to the casinos after being shot down by lawmakers in 2008, Patrick is forging ahead on the green energy front.

Federal oceans chief to discuss fishing in Boston


The nation's oceans chief is set to meet with local politicians and representatives of the Massachusetts fishing industry as new federal fishing regulations loom. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration head Jane Lubchenco will attend the Boston meeting Monday as fishermen prepare for a May 1 switch to a "sector" management system.

Child rape suspect faces dangerousness hearing


A Kingston man accused of raping a 3-year-old girl while he was free on bail for allegedly raping a 5-year-old girl faces a dangerousness hearing. Prosecutors plan to argue at a Tuesday hearing in Brockton Superior Court that 26-year-old Joseph Gardner should be held for 90 days without bail because he poses a danger to society.
