Washington, D.C. (AP) -- More federal dollars will be heading to low-income families to help them heat their homes this winter.
Lawmakers from several cold-weather states, including Massachusetts, had pressed for extra money before Congress took its holiday vacation, and they're about to get their wish.
The government’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance program is expected to get $409 million additional dollars in a year-end budget bill Congress is expected to approve Wednesday.
Senator Ted Kennedy says the money will help needy families across Massachusetts, as 40 percent of homes in the Bay State use oil heat, during a time when fuel prices remain at record-high levels.
