Slowly but steadily, support is building behind President Barack Obama's health care legislation in the House, the result of intense lobbying and politically targeted changes aimed at reassuring waverers and winning over critics. However, one local Democrat is already breaking ranks. Congressman Stephen Lynch of South Boston tells WBZ NewsRadio he doesn't like what the Senate did to the original bill. "Unlike the bill I voted for in the House, the Senate bill has stripped out basically all the significant reform in the health care reform bill, it puts back the ability of the insurance companies to operate as monopolies. We had stripped that out."
The 2-year old who was allegedly beaten by his own mother in Rehoboth has died. The boy was rushed to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island early Thursday morning. According to the Bristol County D.A.'s office, the boy was badly beaten on the face, head and torso. The child's mother, 39-year old Kim Peno is charged with assault and battery with intent to murder. Peno was arrested Thursday on a charge of assault and battery of a child causing substantial injury. She appeared Thursday afternoon in Taunton District Court, where a competency hearing was set for Monday.
A preliminary autopsy performed on the body of a Massachusetts man pulled from a Providence river has found no evidence of foul play. The results released Thursday by the Rhode Island medical examiner's office show that 23-year-old Gregory Hart appears to have drowned in the Woonasquatucket River. Police say they are still investigating Hart's death as suspicious.
Massachusetts House lawmakers have unanimously approved a bill designed to clamp down on school bullies. The bill would ban bullying, require school districts to draft anti-bullying prevention plans and expand the definition of bullying to include the growing problem of cyberbullying. Advocates had criticized the House bill for being weaker than the version approved by the Senate last week.
A man from Maine who struck a match on a U.S. Airways flight to Boston's Logan International Airport is facing some heat - but not over matches. Massachusetts State Police detained 50-year-old Paul Prater of Sanford on Wednesday over an outstanding identity fraud warrant in Canton, Ga. State police spokesman David Procopio said no charges have been brought for the match lighting, which Prater called an accident.
