Things you should know before heading to the Hub on the Fourth



Boston (WBZ Newsroom)  -- The City of Boston is strongly urging people traveling to the Esplanade on the Fourth of July, to take the MBTA.  The T will offer increased bus, rail and subway service, and starting at 10:30 pm., no fares will be collected.

To accommodate the festivities, the following temporary parking restrictions will be implemented.
 
"Tow Zone, No Stopping, Thursday through Saturday" signs will be posted on the following streets:
 
  • Beacon St., both sides, from Arlington St. to Clarendon St.
  • Back St., opposite Dartmouth St. at area where jersey barriers separate Back St. from Storrow Dr.
  • Dartmouth St., both sides, from Beacon St. to Back St.

 "Tow Zone, No Stopping, Saturday" signs will be posted at the following locations:
 
  • Arlington St., both sides, from Beacon St. to Boylston St.
  • Beacon St., both sides, from Charles St. to Arlington St.
  • Berkeley St., both sides, from Beacon St. to Back St., and east side, from Saint James St. to Boylston St.
  • Boylston St., both sides, from Berkeley St. to Arlington St.
  • Chestnut St., both sides, from David G. Mugar Way to Brimmer St.
  • Mount Vernon St., both sides, from David G. Mugar Way to Brimmer St.

In addition, portions of Storrow Dr. in Boston, Memorial Dr. in Cambridge, and the Longfellow and Mass Ave. Bridges will be closed, though spectators will be allowed to stand on the Longfellow Br. during the celebration.  Cleanup will begin 30 minutes after the last firework on July 4th, and all roadways will remain closed until the clean-up is complete, which is expected to be Sunday morning, July 5th.  Boston drivers should be aware that parking meters in the city will be free on July 4th, and drivers may park beyond the usual two-hour limit in metered spaces. All other parking regulations in Boston will remain in effect.

Friday July 3, 2008
Road closures
 
8:00 a.m..--Charles River walkway adjacent to the Charles River closed to pedestrians from the Community Boating area to DCR’s Hatch Shell. The Storrow Drive walkway remains open. Oval area in front of the Hatch Shell closed to public for Boston Pops rehearsal. There will be no parking on Mugar Way between Arlington St. and Charles St.
 
4:00 p.m.--Storrow Dr. closed to westbound traffic from the Lee Pool to Berkeley St., including the entrance from Charles St. Circle. Westbound traffic can re-enter Storrow Dr. at Berkeley St.  The Arlington St. exit from the Storrow Tunnel (eastbound/inbound) will close.

4:30 p.m.--The Fenway and Kenmore exits of Storrow Dr. westbound will be closed.

 

Saturday July 4, 2008
Roadway and Bridge closures
 
12:01 a.m.--No parking on Memorial Dr. (either side) between Mass Ave. and the Longfellow Br.
 
7:30 a.m.--Storrow Dr. (both directions) between Leverett Cir. and Kenmore Sq. will be closed.  The Storrow Dr. exit ramp in the Liberty Tunnel will be closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles. Closures will include the on-ramps to Storrow Dr. from Berkeley St., Charlesgate Area (heading eastbound), Bowker Overpass from Park Dr., and Charles St. Cir. (heading westbound).   No parking at Magazine Beach Area, and no boat launching in this area.  Pedestrian footbridge to the Esplanade at Charles St. Cir. closed. Pedestrian footbridge from Beacon St. to the Esplanade closed. Mugar Way at Beacon St. closed to all pedestrian traffic.
 
4:30 p.m.--Longfellow Br. closes to vehicular traffic in both directions. Pedestrian access will be allowed.   Memorial Dr. closed in both directions from Longfellow Br. to Mass Ave.    Main St., Cambridge from Third St. to the Longfellow Br., closed. Ames St. from Main St. to Memorial Dr., closed. Wadsworth and Amherst Sts., closed. Land Blvd. (Cambridge) from Binney St. to Longfellow Br., closed.  Hayward, Carlton, Charlotte’s Way and Dock Sts., closed.   Access allowed to One Memorial Dr. only with issued permit.
 
6:00 p.m.--Memorial Dr.closed between Mass Ave. Br. and the B.U. Br.  Mass Ave Br. closed to vehicles in both directions from Beacon St. to Vassar St. in Cambridge.  Pedestrians will be allowed to cross.  Vassar St. from Mass Ave. to Memorial Dr., access will be allowed for residents.

11:00 p.m.--Third St. becomes one way from Main St. to Msgr. O’Brien Highway. Craigie Drawbridge (at Leverett Cir.) open for vehicular traffic for 2 hours or until traffic starts to subside. Small boats that can pass under bridge will be allowed to pass.
