Teen seriously hurt in bicycle crash in Swansea


A 15-year-old Somerset teenager is being treated at a Rhode Island hospital after suffering serious injuries in a bike accident Tuesday afternoon. Police and witnesses say the 15-year old rode his bike into oncoming traffic on Bark Street in Swansea. Police say drivers never saw him coming and some witnesses have told police he was wearing headphones at the time. The driver of the car is described as an elderly woman who was so distraught she had to be hospitalized as well.

MA Senate approves Lawrence finance bill


The Massachusetts Senate has approved a bill allowing the city of Lawrence to float up to $35 million in municipal bonds to help balance its budget.  The Senate rejected a Republican-sponsored amendment that would have required the administration to immediately place the city under the control of a state-appointed finance control board.

Lawrence school head indicted on fraud charges


Suspended Lawrence Superintendent Wilfredo Laboy has been indicted on charges of fraud and embezzlement.  An Essex County grand jury returned nine indictments against the educator Tuesday after months of investigation.   Police had raided his home and office. One of the charges accuses him of having alcohol on school grounds.

Braintree Police investigate bold robbery at Zales


Braintree Police are investigating a bold robbery at a Zales jewelry store in South Shore Plaza. Police say the suspect asked to see two loose diamonds worth $20,000 each, and then grabbed them from an employee and ran out of the store to a waiting getaway car.

RMV highlighting ways to avoid branch visit


The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles is trying a workaround after the governor killed a $5 fee it wanted to impose for in-person service. Registrar Rachel Kaprelian called a news conference for Wednesday to highlight two ways to cancel a license plate without having to visit a branch office and wait in line. She says it's "one of the simplest Registry services."

4 choices for low-performing NH schools


Twelve New Hampshire schools considered low-performing must select from four options to qualify for improvement grants. The federal government requires that states identify their lowest-performing schools. The state looked at the last four years of results on the New England Common Assessment Program tests to identify them. Schools could fire the entire staff, close, reopen as a charter school or restructure.

Students to protest for Central Falls teachers


Students and alumni say they'll hold a silent protest in support of the teachers fired at Central Falls High Scool. Tuesday evening's protest is being held as the school district's Board of Trustees meets to discuss the turnaround plan at the failing school. The board voted last month to fire all the teachers and administrators at the school at the end of the school year.

DA: Fatal police shooting justified


Investigators have determined that two state troopers who shot killed a suspect during a drug raid in New Bedford in November acted lawfully. The investigation by the Plymouth district attorney's office released Monday said the troopers fired on suspect Thomas Garnett after he opened fire on police who had knocked on his door and announced their presence.

Library supporters protest planned cuts


Pumping signs in the air and chanting "don't close the books!", over a hundred people gathered Tuesday on the State House steps to protest state funding cuts to the public library system. The Governor's budget proposal for the state library budget is a 37.2% from 2009 levels, according to the MLA. 

NH court refuses to reconsider $110M ruling


The New Hampshire Supreme Court has refused to reconsider its ruling rejecting the state's claim to $110 million surplus from a fund that underwrites medical malpractice insurance. Governor John Lynch spokesman Colin Manning said Tuesday the decision was disappointing.

TSA employee charged with rape


A Logan Airport TSA employee has been ordered held on $50,000 cash bail following his arraignemnt on charges of statutory rape on a 14-year old girl.  The Suffolk District Attorney says Sean Shananhan had sexually asaulted the young girl at his home during school vacation and repeatedly sent her sexually explicit text messages.  He was arraigned Tuesday in East Boston District Court.

The political team that helped Republican Scott Brown stage his improbable victory in the Massachusetts Senate race is now applying its strategy in Rhode Island. The Shawmut Group, led by aides to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, is helping GOP congressional candidate John Loughlin, who's campaigning to replace retiring Democratic Representative Patrick Kennedy.

Mark Kerrigan makes brief court appearance


The brother of figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, charged with assaulting his father in their home shortly before he died, has made a brief pretrial appearance.  Kerrigan and his attorney declined to comment after a scheduling conference in Woburn District Court on Tuesday morning. The next hearing was set for April 9. The 45-year-old Kerrigan is free on $10,000 bail with electronic monitoring.

Review of Big Dig handrails ordered


The state Transportation Department has launched review of handrails in some Big Dig tunnels that have been connected to the deaths of seven people, including a state trooper. Transportation Secretary Jeffrey Mullan ordered the study following a story in The Boston Globe about the deaths of seven people who died after striking or getting entangled in the handrails after accidents.

Menino demands action on old Filene's site


The old Filene's flagship store on Washington Street at Downtown Crossing is the center of controversy. Mayor Tom Menino is not happy that there is still a huge hole in the ground and is threatening to revoke building permits or even seize the land through eminent domain. The mayor fears one developer is sitting on the project to pressure the city to help with financing.  The developers intially planned to build a 39-story tower with offices, retail stores, a hotel, and condominiums, but were forced to stop construction in  2008 because of financial problems.

Providence, RI police to start drug testing


he Providence police department will start randomly testing its officers for drugs after three were arrested in a narcotics probe. Mayor David Cicilline said Monday that he has instructed the police chief to begin testing immediately. Right now, officers can only be tested when they are first hired or when there is reasonable suspicion they are using drugs.

State: Boat driver in fatal NH crash legally drunk


A woman was legally drunk and piloting her 37-foot speed boat too fast when she struck a ledge off Diamond Island in Lake Winnepesaukee, killing her best friend and seriously injuring herself and another passenger, a prosecutor said Monday. Belknap County Attorney James Carroll called the June 15, 2008, crash a "criminal event" for which Erica Blizzard, 36, should be held accountable.

Man stabbed in Pittsfield restaurant parking lot


Pittsfield police are investigating the weekend stabbing death of a former high school basketball star who was found in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant. Authorities say 26-year-old Jahda Martin was found lying in the parking lot of a Burger King at about 1:40 a.m. on Saturday. He was taken to Berkshire Medical Center where he later died.

New trial for 'Clark Rockefeller' denied


The judge who presided over the trial of Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter last year has denied the defendant's motion to get a new trial.  After a six-day trial last summer, the man who called himself “Clark Rockefeller” was found guilty of kidnapping his daughter, then 7, during a 2008 custody visit and taking off to Baltimore.

Father on trial in daughter's death


Opening arguments are underway in the trial of Michael Reily, the Hull father charged with killing his four-year old daughter, Rebecca. Prosecutors have been granted permission by the judge to use grizzly crime scene photos of the body of Rebecca during opening statements. The little girl died on the floor of her parents bedroom from an overdose of prescription anti-psychotic drugs. Prosecutors say Reily and his wife Carolyn routinely gave the girl more drugs than necessary in order to keep her "calm". Carolyn Reily was convicted in a separate trial earlier this year.
