Boston (WBZ Newsroom) -- An elementary school in Dorchester was briefly placed in "safe mode" after a man was shot and killed nearby.
The John Marshall Elementary School was also being used as a polling place for Tuesday's elections.
Boston Police say shortly before noon a 23-year-old man was shot several times on Bowdoin Street. He was taken to Boston Medical Center where he later died.
Another man was scene running from the area.
For a brief time, no one at the school was able to enter or leave the building, although students and staff were allowed to move around according to a school department spokesman.
Polling stations at the school remained open.
Police are are searching for the shooter. He's described as being about 5 feet, 9 inches to 6 feet tall with a white T-shirt and baseball cap.
He was last spotted running to Greenbrier Street.
