Massachusetts (WBZ Newsroom) -- It's been a tragic start to the long holiday weekend in Massachusetts.
Eight people were killed in four seperate accidents in the early mourning hours of Saturday.
The first accident occured in Quincy in the first minutes of the Independence Day holiday. One person died in the four-car crash at the intersection of East Howard and Quincy Ave. Six people were taken to the hospital, one in critical condition.
Three people died in a single-car accident in Walpole. Police there say it happened shortly after 1:00 on East Street at High Plains.
The victims are identified as Nicholas Kelly, 20 of Walpole; Anna DuBois, 20 of Walpole; and Amanda Murray, 23 of Medfield. The driver of the crash survived. He is identified as Jaso Wayne Sperlin, 31 of Lake Worth, Florida. He is being charged with 3 counts of motor vehicle homicide while under the influence.
Less than two hours later, another three people were killed in a single-car accident in Attleboro. The victims were thrown from their vehicle when it rolled over on northbound I-95. They've been identified as Gleidson Pereira, 23, who was the driver, and two passengers, Lavdeir De Silva, 29, and Ivanildo De Souza, both of Plymouth. A third passenger, Samuel Torres-Mendes, 29, of Plymouth, suffered serious injuries and has been taken to Rhode Island Hospital. None of the four occupants were wearing seatbelts.
Also today, around 6:00 Saturday morning in Sudbury a person was killed and another injured in an accident on Route 20.
All four accidents are under investigation by local and state police.
