Booster Seats

Boston -- Today's Segment:

Booster seats are now required for many kids while riding in cars, but a study shows several booster seats on the market don't do the job.

Several car booster seats do a poor job of positioning children to fit in their seat belts...that's according to a review by the insurance industry and researchers. The Virginia-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, found nearly a third of the 41 child booster seats they tested were ineffective...

Those booster seats are made by several manufacturers. Anne McCartt, senior vice-president for research at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says it's important for small children to be placed in booster seats...

McCartt says using a booster seat can make a big difference in keeping your child safe...

The seats are meant to "boost" a young child so the seat belt is routed across a child's lower hips and mid-shoulders instead of the stomach, because the liver and spleen are more vulnerable to injury. Officials suggest parents buying a new booster seat try it out in their car, and see how the seat belt fits on their child while sitting in the seat.
