Jos Roozen was born in Holland on March 21, 1947. His family grew flower bulbs since the early 1800's. Jos worked on the family farm part time, while studying horticulture. After graduating he worked on the family farm full time for five years. In 1971, he packed his things and moved to the United States. He worked at a large garden center for three years and in 1974, Jos decided to start a lawn maintenance business. One year later, he founded Roozen Nursery, a retail garden center in Fort Washington, Maryland. He was joined by his brother Eric, two years later and Roozen’s Nursery had quickly became the areas leading garden center.
Jos’s interest in media started while working with then “garden guru”, Jack Eden. Jos and Jack produced over 200 one hour long "Garden of Eden" television shows, that where aired across the nation on national television.
In 1995, Jos decided to turn his love for salt water fish into a new division of his retail store. That is when he expanded his nursery to include a saltwater ornamental fish department, which has now grown to one of the largest saltwater fish retail stores on the east coast.
Roozen Nursery not only sells lawn fertilizer but has also been involved in the development of some of the most advanced and environmentally safe plant and turf fertilizers. Formally Turf Assurance and now Plant and Turf Trust.
As if he was not busy enough, in 1999, Jos started a garden show on WMAL radio "The Roozens Garden Show". In 2005 Rick Fowler joined the format and added a comedic side to the show. The already very popular show now "Garden Sense" in still gaining popularity and is currently aired in Washington, D.C, Baltimore, MD, Wilmington, DE, Philadelphia, PA, and Worcester, MA.
Jos continues to stay involved in the day to day operations of the saltwater fish and nursery departments. He loves what he does and has spent a lifetime developing and growing his business while happily married with five children. It is not all business at times, Jos enjoys joking and interacting with his longtime customers and employees while still working hard.
